Riassunto
La tesi prende in esame alcuni monumenti eretti durante il fascismo che ancora oggi popolano le nostre piazze. Partendo dal concetto di eredità difficile (difficult heritage), la ricerca si concentra sull’analisi storico-artistica di tre opere situate nella provincia del Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, tutte realizzate nel corso del ventennio fascista. Si tratta di monumenti tuttora visibili, ma che con il tempo sono stati dimenticati o volutamente trascurati, quasi rimossi dalla memoria collettiva. L’obiettivo della ricerca è riportarli alla luce, ricostruendone la storia e il contesto di realizzazione.
I tre casi di studio, pur distinti tra loro, sono accomunati dalla volontà del Partito Nazionale Fascista di celebrare i caduti o di valorizzare figure considerate esemplari, come il generale Luigi Cadorna o il pioniere dell’aviazione Geo Chavez. Le opere analizzate sono il Mausoleo Cadorna, il Monumento ai Caduti di Domodossola e un cippo commemorativo dedicato a Geo Chavez.
The thesis examines a number of monuments erected during the Fascist period that still populate our public squares today. Drawing on the concept of difficult heritage, the study focuses on the art-historical analysis of three works located in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, all created during the twenty-year Fascist era. These monuments remain visible, yet over time they have been forgotten or deliberately neglected, almost erased from collective memory. The aim of the research is to bring them back into view by reconstructing their history and the context in which they were produced. Although distinct from one another, the three case studies are united by the National Fascist Party’s desire to commemorate the fallen or to promote figures regarded as exemplary, such as General Luigi Cadorna or aviation pioneer Geo Chavez. The works discussed are the Cadorna Mausoleum, the Domodossola War Memorial, and a commemorative marker dedicated to Geo Chavez.
