Riassunto
This dissertation examines and analyzes the evolution of the United Kingdom’s maritime security strategies, focusing on the Royal Navy's historical role, strategic choices, and future outlook within a complex and highly demanding geopolitical global environment. From its dominance during the British Empire to its adaptation through two world wars and the Falklands conflict to the 21st century, the Royal Navy has been a cornerstone of British defence and international influence and deterrence. The study explores the Navy's transition from traditional sea power to a modern force equipped with advanced technology, including autonomous systems, artificial intelligence, and cyber warfare capabilities.
The dissertation highlights key moments of the Royal Navy evolution, such as the introduction of nuclear-powered submarines, the growing importance of aircraft carriers from the Cold War until nowadays, and the impact of recent defence reviews on fleet modernization. Despite facing challenges like economic constraints, evolving maritime threats, and the need for technological innovation, the Royal Navy continues to play a vital role in global security. The analysis emphasizes the importance of international alliances, the balancing of power projection with defence, and the ongoing need for skilled personnel and updated training methods. The dissertation concludes with a forward-looking perspective, suggesting that through continued modernization and strategic adaptation, the Royal Navy is well-positioned to maintain its critical role in safeguarding UK interests and contributing to international stability in an increasingly uncertain world.
