Riassunto
The bioavailability of nutraceuticals is a very important topic to consider because most of the phytotherapeutic compounds have poor pharmacokinetics and absorption. The inefficiency of some nutraceuticals may be linked to the action of gastric juices, cytochromes, intestinal microbiota but also from other systems present in the intestine like the ATP-binding cassettes that remove the compounds inserted into the enterocytes. To improve the bioavailability of a nutraceutical can be used substances that increase it, named bioenhancer herbs. For this purpose it is also possible to use liposomes, or better yet, phytosomes, or particular galenic techniques based on the function of the preparation. In recent years the impact of cardiovascular disease has increasingly become one of the leading causes of death. In this case the use of nutraceuticals is constantly increasing because they can improve the quality of life without side effects, typical of drugs, and are also better assimilated and used by the body. The main nutraceuticals are used to improve the lipid profile through inhibition: hepatic synthesis of cholesterol and intestinal absorption of cholesterol; or they can reduce hypertension and they may contain more active ingredients in the same supplement.
