Riassunto
Automation has been and continues to be an important concern for the public debate. There are several contributions that analyze the extent to which labor and machines are substitutes or complements. The analysis in this paper addresses the relationship between labor supply and automation innovation. The enlargements of the European Union occurred in the 2000s, are exploited to isolate the effects of positive shock in labor supply in most of the EU-15 countries. The main data source is PATSTAT Database: patents are proxied as measure for automation innovation. With the implementation of staggered Difference-in-Differences we aim to identify heterogenous treatment effects. The estimates indicate that increases in stock of workers after the enlargements have reduced automation innovation.
