The objective of this thesis is to design and implement a carbon-aware traffic scheduling framework for Kubernetes environments, with the aim of reducing carbon emissions in microservice deployments while maintaining service quality guarantees. In particular, a solution is provided for extending Kubernetes deployments with the objective of automatically orchestrating traffic routing in a black-box manner, without modifying the source code of applications. The thesis also demonstrates the practical application of the solution through controlled testing, evaluating whether and how the proposed methodology can reduce carbon emissions while respecting quality constraints.
