Lock-in is a phenomenon that occurs when a consumer (or downstream firm in a value chain) becomes "trapped" in the value proposition of a supplier firm. This happens because when the consumer (or downstream firm) wants to change suppliers, there are a number of costs whose characteristics and magnitude discourage change, so exiting lock-in is difficult and very costly. This thesis presents a description of this phenomenon and the events that cause it, discusses in great detail the costs that characterize it, and investigates the strategic choices to stimulate lock-in and to exit it. The thesis presents case studies for a better understanding of the phenomenon, in which we go to contextualize what has been said in 2 exemplary contexts of relevant interest.
