Riassunto (Italiano)
This thesis is focused on providing evidence that human lens epithelial cells (HLECs) can respond to two natural pro-inflammatory stimuli, 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (HNE) and D-glucose, leading to the activation of the inflammatory response pathway associated with transcription factor NF-κB and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), in order to recapitulate some typical diabetes complications and to test the effectiveness of inhibitors of aldose reductase and carbonyl reductase, whose enzymatic activity is highly connected with inflammation.
