The thesis aims at developing HPLC-DAD-MS2 strategies for the identification and characterization of tannins, logwood and sepia inks in historical samples. The set of reference inks was naturally and artificially aged and investigated in order to evidence possible changes in their behavior. The results obtained allowed us to identify the molecular markers of the dyes on micro-quantities of ink samples, providing us with methods able to perform studies on their degradation and aging mechanisms. The protocol and the information obtained were successfully used for the study of ink samples collected from manuscripts, letters and drawings produced in the late 19° century.
