Luck and a rise of a merchant from Procida in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany at the end of XVIII century: the life of a self-made man in the freeport of Leghorn. A public shopkeeper "at the edges of the institutions" succeeded in placing its initiatives merchant thanks to international conflicts of his time, the french revolutionary wars.
Thanks to its link with the Spanish consul in Leghorn, Emanuel De Silva, he was able to generate profits with the procurement of wheat to the besiegers of Toulon and then during the revolutionary wars Domenico Scotto embodied briefly the role of provider of guns for the Spanish Crown. The wealth that resulted from the initiative of this seems to generate from small merchant who supplies soon arrived to interact with prominent members of local and foreign institutions: political ties were crucial and they guaranteed him a preferential channel for traffic and a shield made of protection and privileges.
