Riassunto (Inglese)
This thesis calibrates three stochastic volatility models to the S&P 500 implied volatility surface: the classical Heston model, Rough Heston, and Lifted Heston.
The work addresses a structural limitation of Heston: the model fails to reproduce how the market steepens the implied volatility skew at short maturities. The market shows that this skew becomes more pronounced as time to expiration decreases according to a power law, whereas Heston flattens it. The solution is to introduce roughness through a fractional kernel with Hurst exponent H around 0.1. This approach reconciles two empirical findings: realized volatility time series appear rough, and the implied skew exhibits the same behavior.
Rough Heston implements this idea while maintaining analytical tractability, but at a high computational cost. Lifted Heston approximates the rough kernel with exponentials, remaining more efficient for simulation.
The results show that both rough models reduce overall pricing error relative to Heston, especially at short maturities. The two rough models are practically equivalent in pricing but differ in computational cost. Diagnostics on simulated paths confirm that the calibrated roughness is genuinely present in the path dynamics.
