Riassunto
3GPP LTE is claimed to be the next generation technology for wireless mobile communication. It achieves high data rates and low latencies with advanced communications techniques such as higher order modulation and turbo coding.
These solutions are very power-hungry, thus the User Equipment (UE) battery life has become a very important topic. Within this context, LTE system adopts Discontinuous Reception (DRX) at the link level for power saving.
DRX gives the UE the possibility to switch off part of its circuitry for congurable periods, following a timing pattern described with a certain number of parameters.
In this work we study various techniques for setting these parameters accordingly to VoIP trac characteristics, trying to control the trade-off between power consumption and the desired QoS. We present simulations results obtained with an enhanced version of the ns-2 system for different system congurations.
Results show that we can achieve considerable power savings, also with a negligible impact over the VoIP communication quality, that could always be controlled.
