Riassunto
Sensory feedback in humans is fundamental to ensure a robust manipulation of fragile objects, object slippage detection, and exemption from visual contact with the object held. This sensory feedback is a crucial property missing in current battery-powered advanced prostheses.
In this thesis, we study the feasibility of delivering a non-invasive, transitory, matched-modality sensory feedback (i.e., pressure on skin) where the feedback is delivered at the beginning of the grasp and it is then faded out to reduce power consumption. We compare its performance with established sensory feedback policies in the literature (i.e., continuous matched modality feedback and DESC) using a virtual-reality based grasp-and-hold test with a virtual fragile box.
The transitory sensory feedback proved to be comparable to the continuous sensory feedback in the number of successful trials and both feedback policies showed improvement compared to no-feedback and DESC feedback conditions.
