The dissertation intends to analyse two texts, “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” and “Bēowulf”, from a pragmatic – analysis of the flyting episode between Gawain and the Green Knight – and linguistic – investigation of the several epithets and periphrases used of Bēowulf’s adversaries – point of view, respectively. Such a study aims to give a description of the figure of the hero in relation to the adversaries he has to fight with, highlighting two different moments in which the usual strictly demarcated borderline between the hero and his antagonists begins to blur.
