Riassunto
The present dissertation focuses on the way communication with the Other World was represented in literary works preceding the advent of Spiritualism. After identifying the conditions that are necessary in order for contact between the interlocutors to be established, it analyses the strategies through which these conditions are fulfilled in the context of supernatural interactions and the metaphysical distance that divides the speaker overcome. Theories that circulated widely at the time on both sides of the Atlantic - such as animal magnetism and sympathy - are argued to play a fundamental role in this process and in making communication with the Other World possible.
