Riassunto (Inglese)
This thesis offers an original Italian translation of the first part of Antonine Maillet’s novel Le chemin Saint-Jacques, along with a critical analysis of the challenges it entails. Its aim is to bring out the difficulties posed not only by the Acadian variety, but also by the author’s style as a whole. The work is divided into three chapters. The first sets out the historical, variational and sociolinguistic context of Acadia and Maillet’s literary world, with an emphasis on the evolution of orality in her writing. The second presents the Italian translation of the first twenty chapters, with the original text on facing pages. The third forms the core of the analysis: a translation commentary on the issues raised by the axes of linguistic variation and by the originality of Maillet’s writing, characterized by wordplay, onomastic irony and a dense network of intertextual references. The discussion of translation choices is not exhaustive: a representative sample has been selected, sufficient to convey the complexity of the text. The main difficulty posed by the novel lies in the intertwining of the axes of variation and the overlapping of wordplay, figures of speech and idioms, which make form and content inseparable. The translation is therefore the result of a constant search for a compromise between fidelity to the letter and attention to the final effect.
