Riassunto
Physics experiments in particle accelerators are very sensitive to environmental noise, such as nuclear radiations, electric and magnetic fields. The accuracy of the sensors is also limited by single events upsets and is severely affected by fluctuations in their power supply system.
In order to guarantee the successful execution of the experiments, communications with the power supply system must be as reliable and as fast as possible.

Reliability of communication is crucial for the correct development of such experiments, while speed allows to perform more experiments in the same amount of time, also improving the efficiency and the user’s experience.

The work of this thesis is focused on the analysis of a dedicated communication protocol based on CAN bus (Controller Area Network): we will study the latest innovations in the CAN industry, we will measure the performance of the current system, we will find the bottlenecks and we will fix them.
We will also do some considerations to achieve the best trade off between innovation and backward compatibility.
