    Riassunto

This thesis combines translation studies with a sociolinguistic perspective. The first part presents the partial translation of Quaglio’s work, accompanied by a critical commentary that highlights the main challenges and strategies adopted in rendering academic discourse into Italian. The second part focuses on the functional use of vocatives in two sitcoms, Friends (1994–2004) and New Girl (2011–2018). By comparing the two corpora, the study investigates how vocatives contribute to character interaction, pragmatics, and identity construction, while also reflecting broader linguistic and social changes over time. The analysis shows that New Girl displays a more marked and inclusive use of vocatives than Friends, aligning with contemporary conversational practices and evolving attitudes towards gender-neutral and relational language. This research thus bridges translation practice with linguistic analysis, offering insights into both cross-cultural mediation and the dynamic evolution of spoken English in popular media.
