The aim of the present study is to determine which ceramic forming techniques were in use in Kythera during the Bronze Age and, based on such study.
A total of five deposits from the site of Kastri referring to different, sequential Palatial phases will be analyzed so that it will be possible to make considerations about the evolution and change of the pottery-making process through time on the island. The primary goal will be to identify the involvement of the wheel in such processes and then to try better define the precise method followed, according to Roux and Courty's classifications.
An overview about the change in the approach to technological studies will be given as well as a proper explanation of the new concept of "wheel-coiling" against the traditional "wheel-thrown" definition will be provided.
Finally, the dataset collected from the Kytheran material will be compared to results obtained by scholars in Crete to better understand the connection between the two islands, the process of Minoanization in Kythera and the role of Kythera in the spreading of Minoan traditions in the Greek world.
Conclusions drawn about the use of the wheel in Bronze Age Kythera will thus be used as a basis for a debate regarding the history of the island in the Minoan period and the way external cultural influences were absorbed, elaborated. accepted and expressed in the daily life of the Kytheran community.
In order to classify the 750 studied vessels, an Access database has been created by the candidate.
