La tesi ha come oggetto di studio la figura di Teodoro di Mopsuestia (ca. 350-428), uno dei più autorevoli esegeti e teologi della Tarda Antichità, condannato come eretico nel secondo Concilio di Costantinopoli del 553 in relazione alla questione detta dei «Tre Capitoli». Ricostruire il pensiero teologico e il contesto nel quale egli ha operato sono i principali obiettivi della ricerca. Il lavoro si apre con una ricostruzione biografica e una generale presentazione delle sue opere. Procederemo con una esposizione del suo metodo esegetico fino a trattare gli aspetti teologici e cristologi della sua dottrina. Infine, ripercorreremo le travagliate vicende che hanno portato alla sua condanna e dedicheremo breve spazio alla grande fama che gli tributò la Chiesa Siro-Orientale. In questo lavoro si metteranno in risalto due aspetti in particolare: la “militanza” teologica di Teodoro, sempre impegnato nelle dispute cristologiche del suo tempo; la sua fedeltà alla tradizione ortodossa e la conseguente infondatezza delle accuse a lui attribuite.

This thesis focuses on the figure of Theodore of Mopsuestia (ca. 350-428), one of the most influential exegetes and theologians of Late Antiquity, condemned as heretic at the second Council of Constantinople in 553 in relation to the question called the «Three Chapters». Reconstructing theological thought and the context in which he worked are the main objectives of the research. The work opens with a biographical reconstruction and a general presentation of his works. We will proceed with an exposition of his exegetical method to deal with the theological and Christological aspects of his doctrine. Finally, we will look at the troubled events that led to his condemnation and we will devote a short space to the great fame he received from the Syrian Eastern Church. The paper will highlight two aspects in particular: the theological “militancy” of Theodore, always involved in the Christological disputes of his time; and his loyalty to the orthodox tradition with the consequent unfoundedness of the accusation attributed to him.
