Riassunto (Inglese)
Never before have affective bonds been so free from prescriptive scripts; yet it is precisely within this freedom that they appear uncertain, fragile, traversed by a diffuse suffering that is difficult to name, as postmodern literature has well illustrated through the contributions of Ulrich Beck, Zygmunt Bauman and Anthony Giddens. Involvements that resist definition, relationships suspended in indeterminacy, the recurring question of "where do we stand": these are experiences that public discourse tends to dismiss as the mark of a generation incapable of commitment. This thesis stems from an unease with such a stereotyped and reductive interpretation, and asks what truly renders the bonds of young adults vulnerable, and why they cause suffering. Its underlying assumption is that romantic suffering is not a private flaw of those who undergo it, but a socially and culturally mediated phenomenon: retracing the thought of Eva Illouz, and in light of those analyses of late modernity that illuminate its conditions – individualization, reflexivity, the pluralization of relational forms – the uncertainty of the bond can be read as the outcome of transformations that concern society before individuals. Within this theoretical horizon (explored in the first chapters), the study examines how relational uncertainty and ambiguity are experienced and interpreted by young adults in Italy, and how such experiences intertwine with recognition, the value of the Self, and emotional well-being, through a qualitative inquiry (which constitutes the second part of the work). Drawing on the notions of Symbolic Interactionism and through Charmaz's Constructivist Grounded Theory, fourteen in-depth interviews were conducted with a sample of young adults aged between twenty and thirty, and then analysed through a process of coding and constant comparison. A unitary model emerges: what participants experience is not a deficit in the capacity to love, but a continuous work – that of preserving the self in the openness to the bond. What sets it in motion is the ambiguity of the relationship: the undecidability that, by preventing the closure of the definition of the situation, generates dependence and amplifies suffering. This work can take three forms, ranging from autonomy to dependence: defending one's own space from the bond, allowing oneself to be transformed by the bond without losing oneself, or dissolving into it. Vulnerability thus reveals itself not as a character trait, but as a moment in relational experience: the point at which that balance between self and other may falter, giving way to suffering. Read from the perspective of Social Work, the conclusions shift the gaze from individual deficit to relational process, and open onto the prospect of an affective education: not a topic to be discussed, but an experience to be practised.
