Riassunto
The Internet of Things paradigm has brought many new challenges for the design of protocols and standards to be used by the constrained devices. For this aim, the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) has been recently standardized by the Internet Engineering Task Force to fulfil all the requirements of the applications running on the IoT. Relying on the UDP transport layer, CoAP has to handle the problem of congestion control explicitly and performs it in a very basic way. Several weaknesses have been identified in this basic congestion control algorithm, thus recently a more advanced version of the protocol, named CoCoA+, has been proposed.
The aim of this work is to carry out an extensive performance evaluation of some congestion control policies alternative to CoCoA+ that have been designed to try and overcome some of the drawbacks that are still present in the algorithm. The work takes the distances from many other studies present in the literature as a testbed composed of real devices, provided by the European WiSHFUL project, has been exploited for the analysis of the performance of the algorithms. The software framework running on the devices has been extended to allow the design of the algorithms and the execution of the experiments.
