Riassunto
The present research aims to investigate the forms and the functions of the future perfect in ancient Greek.
This formation shows different issues: the question of its origin (Cakot 1911; Magnien 1912; Chantraine 1942; Wackernagel 1928; Willi 2018), the question of the function of reduplication (Di Giovine 1996; Niepokuj 1997; Orlandini-Poccetti 2017) and the question of the selection of middle voice in this type of formation. Considering these issues, the present research comprises three phases.
Firstly, we address the issue of the origin of the future perfect. Therefore, the stems and reduplicated types of this formation are analysed to verify whether future perfect is formed on the perfect stem or, rather, other stems can be used (e.g., the stem of reduplicated aorist, cf. Chantraine 1942).
Then, we examine the reduplicated types on functional grounds. We aim to compare the function of reduplication in future perfect to the function of reduplication in perfect and reduplicated aorist to clarify whether future perfect belong to the perfect or the aorist paradigm. Lastly, the relationship between the future perfect and the sigmatic future is investigated. Our aim is to test whether reduplication differentiates the two categories or not.
Finally, we focus on the issue of the selection of middle voice in this kind of formation. We would reconsider this issue starting from new studies on the middle voice (Lazzeroni 1990; Benedetti 2002; Romagno 2002, 2005), which outlined that the middle voice is linked to the category of inaccusativity. So, the verbs which show a future perfect are analysed on both formal and functional grounds, with the aim of clarifying whether these verbs are included in the media tantum group or, rather, encode the values that have been attributed to the oppositional middle (Romagno 2010, 2021).
The corpus consists of Iliad, Odyssey, and the texts form the 5th and 4th century A.C. The present research project aims to investigate the forms and the functions of the future perfect in ancient Greek.
