Riassunto (Inglese)
Plastic production has increased from the 1950s to the present day, leading to a rapid accumulation
of plastic waste and raising the challenge of its disposal. Bioplastics represent a valid alternative to
conventional plastics, and their production is expected to increase in the near future. One of the
attractive aspects of bioplastics is the possibility of end-of-life valorisation, thanks to their
biodegradability and compostability. However, these processes can be affected by the presence of
additives and other unsuitable substances, such as polyethylene (PE). Since the percentage of these
components in bioplastic blends is regulated by European standards, including UNI EN 13432:2000,
it is essential to develop analytical methods for their quantitative determination. Hyphenated
techniques such as analytical pyrolysis coupled with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (PyGC/MS) are efficient methodologies for measuring small amounts of polymers, but they are not
suitable for rapid screening analyses. Attention has therefore turned to spectroscopic techniques
such as ATR-FTIR. In this study, we developed a procedure for PE quantification in bioplastics using
ATR-FTIR integrated with multivariate data analysis. IR spectra of reference samples were acquired,
and the data were pre-treated through baseline correction, normalization, and second-derivative
calculation. Through principal component analysis (PCA), PE-specific wavenumbers were identified
and then used to perform partial least squares (PLS) regression. Subsequently, bioplastic bags were
analysed, and the data were processed using the developed procedure to determine the
content of PE. Finally, the presence of additives in bioplastic bags was screened by (TD)GC/MS to
investigate possible matrix effect on the ATR-FTIR analysis arising from the overlap between
additive IR bands and those characteristic of PE. The results indicate that the developed ATR-FTIR
method can be employed as a screening tool for the identification of potentially non-compliant items
according to European regulations.
