Riassunto (Inglese)
This thesis investigates an innovative approach for assessing the nitrogen nutritional status of turfgrass by integrating an RGB camera, managed through a Raspberry Pi 5, onto an autonomous robotic mower. The study addresses the need for more precise and sustainable turfgrass management, aiming to reduce unnecessary nitrogen applications and limit nitrate leaching risks. The experiment was carried out in Pisa on hybrid bermudagrass ‘Tahoma 31’, using increasing nitrogen fertilization rates to create a clear nutritional gradient. The proposed robotic system was compared with established monitoring methods: NDVI measured with a handheld GreenSeeker sensor and DGCI derived from RGB images acquired by a drone. The results showed strong and highly significant positive correlations between nitrogen rates and vegetation indices, as well as a very high agreement between DGCI values obtained from the robotic mower and the drone. Overall, the system proved to be a reliable tool for describing turfgrass vigor and nitrogen status, offering a practical, georeferenced and high-frequency monitoring solution that can be integrated into routine mowing operations.
