Riassunto (Inglese)
This thesis evaluated the physiological, biochemical and biometric response of pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) plants subjected to different temperature and light radiation conditions. The experiment was carried out at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, within the framework of the research activity of IVIA. Non-grafted plants of the cultivar Palermo RZ F1, indicated as VA, and plants grafted onto the line/accession 103, indicated as VA/103, were grown in controlled growth chambers under two thermal regimes, 28/18 °C and 23/13 °C, and two light radiation levels, HL and LL.
Chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters, photosynthetic pigments, antioxidant enzyme activities, total antioxidant metabolites and biometric parameters were analysed. The results showed that the combination of low temperature and high radiation represented the most critical condition for the plants. In particular, a reduction in PSII photochemical efficiency was observed, together with an increase in NPQ, indicating the activation of photoprotective mechanisms.
From a biochemical point of view, the antioxidant response was modulated over time. At the second sampling time, the increase in SOD activity, together with the higher activity of APX and DHAR, suggested a greater involvement of the ascorbate-glutathione cycle in the detoxification of reactive oxygen species. Total ascorbic acid and total glutathione also showed changes consistent with the activation of antioxidant systems.
The biometric data confirmed what was observed at the physiological and biochemical levels. Low temperature reduced biomass, leaf area and fruit development, whereas high radiation promoted growth and production only under optimal thermal conditions. Grafting, although included in the experimental design, did not show a consistent effect on the overall plant response.
In conclusion, pepper plants showed a response strongly influenced by the interaction between temperature and light radiation. The results suggest the need for further studies to better understand the mechanisms of tolerance to combined stress, including comparisons with other rootstocks or genotypes and validation under greenhouse conditions.
