Riassunto (Inglese)
This thesis is set within the context of the energy transition and the circular economy, proposing a strategy for the valorization of lithium recovered from spent lithium-ion batteries. The study focused on lithium recovery from black mass, the electrochemically active fraction of the cells, through a hybrid process based on carbothermal reduction followed by water leaching.
The experimental activity was designed using the Design of Experiments (DOE) methodology to evaluate the influence of the main operating parameters and to identify the optimal conditions for maximizing the lithium recovery efficiency in the form of soluble compounds. The recovered lithium was subsequently utilized in an open-loop recycling approach for the synthesis of advanced ceramic materials based on lithium orthosilicate. Specifically, spherical pebbles were produced using the drip casting technology, intended for use as breeding materials within the blankets of future nuclear fusion reactors to produce tritium through the interaction with neutrons generated by fusion reactions.
Therefore, this thesis work has demonstrated the feasibility of an integrated process for lithium recovery and valorization, contributing to the development of sustainable solutions for end-of-life battery management and the production of strategic materials for the energy sector.
