Riassunto
In this thesis work, the preparation of composite materials based on a thermoplastic matrix and inorganic mineral fillers and their characterization in terms of thermal and mechanical behaviour have been investigated. In particular, PET-based materials filled with aluminas with different size distribution have been taken into account. More specifically, the effect of chain extenders on the processability, mechanical and thermal properties of PET-based composites have been investigated. The aim of the thesis work is to investigate the effects of the fillers and chain extenders on the thermoplastic composite material in order to obtain a novel material with high surface hardness, flexural rigidity, crystallisation rate and thermal stability, as well as the ability to maintain good mechanical properties even at temperatures higher than room temperature. Finally, the PET-based composite with the best properties has been compared with thermoset composite currently on the market. the aim of that comparison is determining whether the PET-based material could replace the filled thermoset resin on the market and up to what working temperature the properties of the thermoplastic composite were comparable to those of the thermoset material.
