L’elaborato ripercorre e analizza l’evoluzione della posizione assunta dagli Stati Uniti nei confronti del più grande partito comunista occidentale, il Partito Comunista Italiano (PCI), alla luce degli eventi nazionali e internazionali che caratterizzarono il lungo decennio degli anni Settanta. L’obiettivo del lavoro è stato quindi quello di approfondire la reciproca percezione e i rapporti intercorsi tra le amministrazioni statunitensi e il Partito Comunista Italiano da un punto di vista politico e, in un certo senso, culturale. In particolare, lo studio si concentra sull’atteggiamento delle amministrazioni repubblicane guidate da Richard Nixon (1969-1974) e Gerald Ford (1974-1977), nonché della presidenza democratica di Jimmy Carter (1977-1981) nei riguardi della questione comunista in Italia. Oltre alla principale letteratura scientifica in materia, la tesi prende quindi in esame fonti primarie di origine statunitense come la serie di documenti Foreign Relations of the United States (FRUS) contenuta nella raccolta Office of the Historian del Dipartimento di Stato degli Stati Uniti d’America; fondamentale ai fini della redazione dell’elaborato è stata anche la consultazione della stampa d’epoca, raccolta negli archivi online di alcuni dei principali quotidiani e settimanali italiani e statunitensi, compresi La Stampa, L’Unità, Rinascita, il New York Times e il Time.

The paper traces and analyses the evolution of the position taken by the United States towards the largest Western communist party, the Italian Communist Party (PCI), in light of the national and international events that characterised the long decade of the 1970s. The aim of the work was therefore to explore the mutual perception and relations between the US administrations and the Italian Communist Party from a political and, in a certain sense, cultural point of view. In particular, the study focuses on the attitude of the Republican administrations led by Richard Nixon (1969-1974) and Gerald Ford (1974-1977), as well as the Democratic presidency of Jimmy Carter (1977-1981) towards the communist question in Italy. In addition to the main scientific literature on the subject, the thesis therefore examines primary sources of US origin, such as the series of documents Foreign Relations of the United States (FRUS) contained in the Office of the Historian collection of the US Department of State. The consultation of the press of the time, collected in the online archives of some of the main Italian and US daily and weekly newspapers, including La Stampa, L'Unità, Rinascita, the New York Times and Time, was also fundamental for the drafting of the thesis.
