Riassunto
In the years 2010-2018 US wages have risen unevenly, as it is shown by ACS data. Top and bottom quantiles of the wage distribution displayed higher growth rates than the median classes. This finding may be explained by demand spillovers - as in Mazzolari and Ragusa (2013) - or skill-biased technical change - as in Autor (2015). Another explanation may be related to migration. This essay estimates the impact of migration inflows on wages at city-skill level, as in Card (2001). OLS estimates show that a 10% difference in the inflow rate is associated with a 2.6% reduction in wages. IV estimates are based on a supply-side predicted inflow rate and point towards a larger effect (7.6%). The difference in the estimates may be interpreted as a preliminary evidence of the presence of demand spillovers.
