La tesi affronta il pensiero di Charles Bray (1811-1884), con un riferimento particolare alla sua opera The Philosophy of Necessity (1841). L'obiettivo del lavoro è quello di illustrare come la teoria frenologica, nella prima metà dell'Ottocento, potesse essere messa al servizio di interpretazioni del reale che, fondandosi su una presunta conoscenza "scientifica" della natura umana, proponevano una visione innovativa del rapporto tra l'uomo e i suoi simili. All'interno della tesi viene inoltre approfondito come la conoscenza "oggettiva" dell'essere umano che la frenologia, per i suoi sostenitori, avrebbe garantito, potesse costituire la base di proposte di riforma delle istituzioni esistenti.

The thesis deals with the thought of Charles Bray (1811-1884), with particular reference to his work The Philosophy of Necessity (1841). The object of this work is to show how phrenological theory, in the first half of the nineteenth century, could be used for interpretations of reality which, based on a presumed "scientific" knowledge of human nature, proposed an innovative vision of the relationship between man and his fellow men. Within the thesis it is also explored how the "objective" knowledge of the human being that phrenology, for its supporters, guaranteed, could constitute the basis of proposals for reform of existing institutions.
