Riassunto (Inglese)
This thesis focuses on the design, the fabrication and the characterization of the active region for detectors such as Transition Edge Sensors (TES) and Josephson Escape Sensors (JES) in the form of superconducting Al/Cu bilayer nanowires. TESs are extremely sensitive superconducting thermometers operating at the critical temperature Tc. JESs are one-dimensional nanowires which operate in the superconducting state and whose transition is governed by the overcoming of the washboard potential barrier, resulting in a reduction of noise. Samples were fabricated with a Cu thickness varying between 12 nm and 18 nm (with Al fixed at 15 nm) and widths ranging from approximately 300 nm to 1.6 µm, by means of electron beam lithography, RIE, and thermal evaporation. Transport measurements at cryogenic temperatures (~20 mK) showed the independence of Tc from the wire width, the linear dependence of the critical current on the width and the possibility of in situ tuning of the transition temperature via the bias current. Furthermore, the dimensional crossover between the 2D and 1D regimes was identified through the BKT and RSJ models, classifying the 314 nm wire as operating in the 1D regime. Finally, the figures of merit of the detectors were estimated, showing a NEP of 10^-24 W/Hz^1/2 and a δν of 5 GHz in JES mode.
