Riassunto (Inglese)
This thesis examines the role of information overload in the process of strategic alternative generation. The starting question concerns how the information environment influences the alternatives that emerge as plausible options for decision makers, even before a choice among them takes place. The study interprets information overload as a phenomenon capable of shaping the structure of the decision space during the generative phase of the decision-making process. The restriction does not necessarily concern the quality of the final choice, but rather the structural variety of the alternatives generated, understood as the diversity of the underlying strategic logics. On this basis, a theoretical framework is developed linking the information environment, information selection, alternative generation, and strategic differentiation, with particular attention to the role of algorithmic mediation in decision-making processes that increasingly rely on homogeneous selection criteria. To explore these relationships, a scenario-based experimental study was conducted to examine the effect of information pressure on the variety of generated alternatives.
The empirical analysis did not produce statistically significant evidence in support of the proposed hypotheses, a result that the study attributes to the limitations of the experimental manipulation and the composition of the sample. Nevertheless, the qualitative findings suggest that processes of interpretation and relevance attribution play a central role in shaping the decision space. The thesis therefore shifts attention from the quality of choice to the variety of possibilities that the decision-making process is able to generate.
