Riassunto
The concept of sustainable development is wide and not-well defined. The many dimensions that it considers should be taken into account in a decision-making process for expressing benefits from economic, environmental and social points of view.
Sustainability indicators are tools which allow to assess trends, to make comparisons among several solutions and to show whether a company is moving towards sustainability, how it is moving and which weak points it has.
An analysis of the definitions of sustainability and of sustainable water management has been carried out in order to understand the various concepts related to these terms. A set of sustainability criteria and indicators has been selected from a literature review for a water and wastewater management system in developing countries.
The Stockholm Water Company, the largest water company in Sweden, has been considered as a case study. A new list of indicators has been selected from the previous set and a model has been applied for their integration. A final combined index has been evaluated with the goal to assess the internal trend of the case company and its progress towards sustainability.
