The thesis presents a systematic literature review on the state-of-the-art related to the
design and development of environmentally sustainable software. After systematically identifying
65 primary studies of interests, the thesis proposes an original taxonomy and exploits it to classify and analyse them. Finally, the thesis discusses the results of the analysis, by also eliciting open research challenges stemming out from the analysis itself.
