La prima parte è dedicata alla multidimensionalità della categoria dei Neet; vi si analizzano in primo luogo le diverse definizioni del fenomeno nel tempo, nello spazio ed i dati offerta dai diversi istituti statistici di ricerca. E' stata esaminata poi ogni singola dimensione esplicativa che concorre a definire tale processo sociale, ossia la condizione occupazionale, la condizione familiare e la condizione scolastica.
Un fenomeno similare e connesso, è rappresentato dalla Dispersione scolastica e universitaria. Su di essa si focalizza la seconda sezione dello studio, in cui vengono descritte le diverse variabili esegetiche che contribuiscono alla formazione di tale “patologia sociale”.
La terza parte rappresenta il “fil rouge” che lega le prime due sezioni e pone le basi per la domanda di ricerca, ossia se esiste una “reale” differenza tra soggetti Neet e studenti inattivi, oppure se il discrimine va ricondotto esclusivamente all'iscrizione universitaria.

The first part is dedicated to the multi-dimensionality of the category of Neet; There are analyzed in the first place the different definitions of the phenomenon over time, in space and offer data from different statistical research institutes. It 'was then examined every single explanatory dimension that helps to define this social process, ie employment status, family status and school conditions.
A similar phenomenon and connected, is represented by school and university dispersion. On it focuses the second section of the study, which describes the different exegetical variables that
contribute to the formation of such a "social pathology".
The third part is the "common thread" that ties the first two sections and lays the foundation for the research question, namely whether there is a "real" difference between subjects Neet students and inactive, or if the dividing line should be attributed solely to enrollment university.
