Riassunto (Italiano)
The purpose of the present study is to analyze different methods of patent evaluation. After a brief introduction about main elements of a patent and the most important arguments for which patents must be evaluated, the main methods of patent evaluation are explained. Among those methods are analyzed and deepened particularly quantitative ones, describing the most important “patent value indicators” until now created and the most important ways for defining the economic value of patents.
Furthermore, in this study a new model of the economic value of patents has been developed as an answer to some questions arisen during the analysis of quantitative methods of patent evaluation. There have been also provided two variations of the model. The first variation concerns patents that are linked to inventions able to satisfy better customer needs. The second regards technological and strategic value of patents. This model, named the “New Model of Patent Value”, and its two variations are applied to a real case of a company operating in mechanical and robotic industry. In this case study the economic value of two patents which are linked to a particular measuring instrument commercialized by the company has been assessed.
