Riassunto
The rising complexity of our present world brings new challenges for to-day’s scientific world and technology. Material science and chemistry play a central role in this scenario, leading every day to new insights and solu-tions to the inextinguishable problems of life. In the last 40 years there has been a huge increase in interest in organic molecules in the fabrication of functional materials, well justified by the numerous advantages these mate-rials exhibit in their possible applications. An interesting branch of this field is the study of organic conjugated molecules capable of emitting circu-larly polarized light. In order to find structures capable of such property in solid state, one has to consider a series of parameters that must be opti-mized in the screening towards the ideal molecular design. In this paper, after an introduction of the general concepts and theories applied in the discussion, we try to revise the most promising molecules trying to ex-trapolate some principles of molecular design. At the end of this review we aim to actualize such principles with the synthesis of a chiral N,N'-([2,2'-bipyridine]-3,3'-diyl) diacetamide derivative and study its chiroptical prop-erties in solution and thin films.
