Riassunto (Inglese)
Urban overspeeding is a major road safety concern, particularly in complex urban environments. This thesis investigates the contextual and behavioural determinants of overspeeding in Milan using large-scale GPS trajectory data. Moving beyond binary definitions, a continuous speed index is introduced to capture both the occurrence and severity of violations. The study integrates road infrastructure, traffic conditions, and trip characteristics with driver-level behavioural profiles inferred from repeated driving patterns. Results show that road context is the dominant factor influencing speed behaviour, while persistent driver tendencies lead to distinct behavioural groups. Overspeeding is more prevalent during low-traffic conditions, nighttime, and on high-capacity roads, highlighting the role of opportunity. Additionally, longer trips and increased road familiarity are associated with higher speeding tendency. The findings provide a scalable, data-driven framework for understanding urban driving behaviour and offer insights for designing more effective infrastructure and policy interventions.
