This thesis examines and translates selected excerpts from the young adult fantasy novel In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan (2017), with particular attention to the function of humor in the representation of gender roles. The study is structured into three sections: a critical chapter, a translation presented alongside the source text, and a translation commentary.
The first section explores the fantasy genre as a productive site for the reconfiguration of social norms, emphasizing its capacity to construct alternative worlds. Within this framework, the novel is analyzed for its portrayal of an elven society characterized by an inversion of conventional gender roles, whereby women occupy positions of authority while men are associated with the domestic sphere. This narrative strategy generates comic effects and simultaneously foregrounds the socially constructed nature of gender.
The second section presents the translation of selected passages, while the final section provides a critical discussion of the translational choices adopted, focusing in particular on the rendering of irony and culturally specific elements. Overall, the thesis highlights the potential of fantasy literature as a means of fostering critical reflection and contributing to the formation of identity among young readers.

La presente tesi analizza e traduce alcuni estratti del romanzo fantasy young adult In Other Lands di Sarah Rees Brennan (2017), concentrandosi sul ruolo della comicità nella rappresentazione dei ruoli di genere. Il lavoro si articola in tre parti: un capitolo argomentativo, la traduzione con testo originale a fronte e un commento traduttologico.
Nel primo capitolo teorico si evidenzia come il fantasy, grazie alla creazione di mondi alternativi, offra uno spazio privilegiato per mettere in discussione le norme sociali. In particolare, il romanzo propone una società elfica caratterizzata dall’inversione dei ruoli di genere: le donne occupano posizioni di potere, mentre gli uomini sono associati alla sfera domestica. Questa scelta genera effetti comici e, al contempo, stimola una riflessione critica sul carattere costruito del genere.
La seconda parte presenta la traduzione di alcuni brani significativi, mentre la terza analizza le strategie adottate, con particolare attenzione alla resa dell’ironia e delle implicazioni culturali. Nel complesso, la tesi mette in luce il potenziale del fantasy come strumento di riflessione e formazione per un pubblico giovane.
