Riassunto (Italiano)
The present thesis aims to examine and compare significant issues related to theories of essence and definition in Aristotle and Avicenna, especially in the central books of the Metaphysics and in the fifth treatise of the metaphysical section of the Kitāb al-Šifāʾ.
Such work consists of three parts. In the first one, I focus on some critical issues in Aristotle's Metaphysics Z and H and show how Avicenna originally develops them in Ilāhiyyāt V. The second part is intended to tackle the problem of the definability of forms according to Aristotle. The third one deals with the problem of the disposition of the chapters of Ilāhiyyāt V, which is not the same in the Latin translation and in the current Arabic edition of the text.
