Riassunto (Inglese)
This thesis, part of the EXTRAFRESCO project, aims to develop sustainable bio-coatings to extend the shelf life of fresh foods and reduce waste. The research utilizes bioactive molecules extracted from agri-food waste (bran, microalgae, hemp) to formulate coatings based on natural biopolymers (chitosan and guar gum).
Concurrently, biodegradable polymeric substrates (mixtures of PLA, PBSA, and PBSe) were developed. To ensure the adhesion of the hydrophilic coating to hydrophobic plastic films, a surface pretreatment via alkaline hydrolysis (NaOH) was optimized.
The resulting materials underwent thorough chemical-physical, thermal, morphological, and mechanical characterization. The results demonstrate the feasibility of an innovative, high-performance active packaging solution aligned with the circular economy.
