This thesis explores the first 80 years of Gibraltar’s British history, maintaining a constant focus on the political and economic debate that this conquest sparked in Great Britain. It highlights the resulting influence not only on relations with the Spanish Monarchy but also on the balance of power in the Western Mediterranean and British projection into the Atlantic. This debate is specifically presented through an analysis of the writings of various contemporary authors, such as James Gordon, John Trenchard, Joshua Gee, and James Lind, whose works illustrate their assessments of Gibraltar’s situation and the proposals they advanced to foster the full development of the settlement. Significant attention is devoted to the proclamation of Gibraltar as a free port and the consequent birth and subsequent growth of the Jewish community that settled there. Furthermore, the study illustrates how various military governors, in interpreting their roles, attempted to shape the reality of Gibraltar by addressing its nature as both a military base and a free port, implementing at least in part their own vision for the settlement. It also considers how periods of conflict and peace concretely influenced their decisions and overall effectiveness. Finally, the thesis covers the salient events of the various Spanish and Franco-Spanish sieges that Gibraltar endured during its first 80 years of British history.

La tesi tratta dei primi 80 anni di storia britannica di Gibilterra, con continua attenzione al dibattito politico ed economico che questa conquista suscitò in Gran Bretagna e sottolineando il condizionamento che ne derivò non solo nei rapporti con la Monarchia spagnola, ma anche negli equilibri di potere nel Mediterraneo occidentale e nella proiezione britannica nell'Atlantico. Il dibattito in particolare viene presentato attraverso la trattazione degli scritti di vari autori dell'epoca, quali James Gordon e John Trenchard, Joshua Gee e James Lind, le cui opere illustrano le loro analisi della situazione di Gibilterra e le proposte avanzate da questi autori per favorire il pieno sviluppo dell'insediamento. Grande attenzione è stata dedicata alla proclamazione del porto franco di Gibilterra e alla conseguente nascita e successivo accrescimento della comunità ebraica che si stabilì in questo insediamento. Viene inoltre illustrato come vari governatori militari, ricoprendo il proprio incarico, abbiano tentato di plasmare la realtà gibilterrina, interpretandone la natura di base militare, oltre che di porto franco, e attuando almeno in parte la propria visione di questo insediamento, senza trascurare come conflitti e periodi di pace abbiano potuto influenzarne concretamente le decisioni e l'efficacia delle stesse. Vengono trattati anche gli eventi salienti dei diversi assedi spagnoli e franco-spagnoli che Gibilterra dovette sostenere durante i primi 80 anni di storia britannica.
