This thesis examines the Roman stone and marble materials found during the stratigraphic excavation of the Bagno Grande sanctuary complex, near the hydrothermal spring of the same name, in San Casciano dei Bagni (Siena). The research focuses on the characterization of the finds through the study of lithotypes, the examination of processing techniques and the formulation of functional hypotheses, integrating the analysis of the fragments with the stratigraphic excavation sequences. The identification of marbles from the entire Mediterranean basin, used in slabs and architectural components, has allowed us to document the high prestige of the site and the liveliness of the commercial flows that affected this rural sanctuary of inland Etruria in the imperial age.

Il presente lavoro di tesi prende in esame i materiali lapidei e marmorei di epoca romana rinvenuti durante lo scavo stratigrafico del complesso santuariale del Bagno Grande, presso l’omonima sorgente idrotermale, a San Casciano dei Bagni (Siena). La ricerca si articola sulla caratterizzazione dei reperti attraverso lo studio dei litotipi, l’esame delle tecniche di lavorazione e la formulazione di ipotesi funzionali, integrando l’analisi dei frammenti con le sequenze stratigrafiche di scavo. L’identificazione di marmi provenienti dall’intero bacino del Mediterraneo, impiegati in lastre e componenti architettonici, ha permesso di documentare l’elevato prestigio del sito e la vivacità dei flussi commerciali che interessavano questo santuario rurale dell'Etruria interna in età imperiale.
