Alitalia, nata nel 1946, è stata per decenni un simbolo dell'aviazione italiana, raggiungendo il suo apice negli anni ‘60 e ‘70. Tuttavia, dagli anni ‘90, ha iniziato a soffrire la concorrenza delle compagnie low-cost e le inefficienze gestionali. Vari tentativi di salvataggio, tra cui aiuti di Stato e privatizzazioni, come l'accordo fallito con KLM nel 2000 e l’ingresso di Etihad nel 2014, non hanno risolto la crisi. Dopo anni di perdite, nel 2021 Alitalia ha cessato le operazioni, sostituita da ITA Airways, compagnia pubblica più snella e con meno debiti. Il governo italiano ha cercato un partner industriale e, dopo trattative con diversi gruppi, Lufthansa ha finalizzato in questi giorni l’acquisizione del 41% di ITA. Questo segna una nuova era per il trasporto aereo italiano, con ITA Airways destinata a entrare nell’orbita del colosso tedesco e nel network di Star Alliance, con l'obiettivo di migliorare competitività e redditività.

However, since the 1990s, it began to struggle due to competition from low-cost airlines and managerial inefficiencies. Various rescue attempts, including state aid and privatizations—such as the failed deal with KLM in 2000 and Etihad's entry in 2014—did not solve the crisis. After years of losses, Alitalia ceased operations in 2021 and was replaced by ITA Airways, a smaller, state-owned airline with fewer debts. The Italian government sought an industrial partner, and after negotiations with several groups, Lufthansa recently finalized the acquisition of 41% of ITA. This marks a new era for Italian air transport, with ITA Airways set to become part of the German giant’s network and Star Alliance, aiming to enhance competitiveness and profitability.
