Riassunto
The main focus of this thesis is part of a study for future upgrades of TileCal, the barrel hadron calorimeter of the ATLAS detector installed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. TileCal is designed to reconstruct the energy of hadrons, jets, 𝜏-leptons, and the missing transverse energy. This thesis combines two types of studies: an original analysis of Test Beam (TB) data to understand the main features of the TileCal calorimeter and a specific study of a new device for reading multi-channel photodetectors. TB data are used to compare three different cut-based methods to separate electrons and hadrons, introducing an alternative method based on simpler-to-reconstruct variables and fit models, independent of MC results. Additionally, tests are conducted on an innovative readout prototype developed by the INFN-Pisa unit and tested in the ATLAS-Pisa group laboratories to demonstrate its feasibility for future TileCal upgrades.
