The introduction of invasive alien species poses a significant threat to global biodiversity and human activities, including apiculture. Vespa velutina, commonly known as the Asian hornet or yellow-legged hornet, is an invasive species from Southeast Asia that has spread across Europe, causing severe damage to beekeeping.
The detection and destruction of nests remain key challenges to control its spread. In this context, radio telemetry has emerged as a promising solution. Unlike other methods, radio telemetry is effective in challenging environments, offering a valuable tool for improving control strategies and reducing the impact of V. velutina on beekeeping and biodiversity.
This thesis aimed to better understand the colonization trend of V. velutina in Tuscany and optimize the radio telemetry technique for nest detection to mitigate its impact on beekeeping. GIS software was used to create detailed distribution and concentration density maps. The telemetry protocol was refined with new methods for capturing and tagging hornets, enhancing nest detection efficiency. Results showed improved precision and speed in tracking, reducing the time required to detect nests. Future perspectives include standardizing the telemetry technique for broader application and extending it to areas of new V. velutina colonization, improving monitoring and management in the early stages of the species’ spread.
