Riassunto
Manufacturing shares in the economy are declining all’over the world with few exceptions.
This progressive deindustrialization process goes well beyond the traditional path of structural change that is associated with development. This phenomenon is particularly worrying in the case of Sub-Saharan African countries and Latin American ones. The GDP levels at which manufacturing shares start to decline in these areas are consistently lower than the developed countries corresponding peak-levels.
In the first part of the research, I will analyze the possible causes of premature deindustrialization trying to link it with the quality of the specialization and with the attitude toward precipitate liberalization policy. The focus of the research will be on a comparison between Latin American countries' path and Asian ones,
In the second part of this work, I will analyze the consequences of premature deindustrialization on the level of employment and on the distribution of wages looking at the possible correlation between declining manufacturing and a weaker (more unequal) wage structure of the society and possible links with stable growth.
