L'elaborato si propone di fornire la prima edizione critica corredata di spoglio linguistico esaustivo dell’intero corpus dei documenti giuridici rogati dal giudice Balduino o Baldovino, estensore delle celebri Testimonianze di Travale (1158), uno dei più importanti testi delle Origini della lingua italiana. L’interesse per questo personaggio è stato rilanciato da un recente saggio nel quale, sulla base di peculiari indizi grafo-fonetici, è stata avanzata per la prima volta l’ipotesi che il giudice provenisse da Pisa o comunque dalla Toscana occidentale, nonostante le due notissime pergamene delle Testimonianze riguardino un contenzioso che coinvolge il vescovo di Volterra e a Volterra siano tuttora conservate, dato che ha sempre fatto ritenere implicitamente che Balduino fosse originario del volterrano. Allo scopo di apportare ulteriori elementi per chiarire la questione, si è proceduto in questa ricerca a uno studio integrato di tutti i documenti sopravvissuti attribuibili alla mano del giudice, in cerca di elementi di interesse linguistico che consentano di sottoporre a verifica l’ipotesi dell’estrazione pisana.

The paper aims to provide the first critical edition accompanied by an exhaustive linguistic review of the entire corpus of legal documents drawn up by the judge Balduino or Baldovino, author of the famous Testimonies of Travale (1158), one of the most important texts of the Origins of the Italian language. Interest in this character was relaunched by a recent essay in which, on the basis of peculiar grapho-phonetic clues, the hypothesis that the judge came from Pisa or in any case from western Tuscany was advanced for the first time, despite the fact that the two very well-known parchments of the Testimonies concern a dispute involving the bishop of Volterra and are still preserved in Volterra, fact that has always implicitly led to the belief that Balduino was originally from the Volterra area. In order to provide further elements to clarify the issue, this research proceeded with an integrated study of all surviving documents attributable to the judge, seeking elements of linguistic interest that would allow the Pisan extraction hypothesis to be tested.
