La tesi – in lingua inglese – si concentra sulle attività iraniane della società americana di consulenze Development and Resources Corporation, attiva nel mondo dal 1956 al 1979 e fondata da David Lilienthal, presentemente chairman della Tenesse Valley Authority. Il progetto, concepito su richiesta del governo iraniano, consiste in una diga sul fiume Dez per generare elettricità idroelettrica, industrializzare la regione e regolare l’acqua per incoraggiare aziende iraniane e statunitensi a sviluppare l’agricoltura intensiva nella regione. La tesi evidenzia le continuità tra settore pubblico e privato nel modello di sviluppo proposto da Lilienthal e l’esportazione di tale continuità nel contesto iraniano, con i conseguenti adattamenti, tensioni e resistenze.

The dissertation focuses on the activities in Iran of the American consulting firm Development and Resources Corporation, active worldwide from 1956 to 1979 and founded by David Lilienthal, formerly chairman of the Tenesse Valley Authority. The project, conceived at the request of the Iranian government, consists of a dam on the Dez River in southwestern Iran to generate hydroelectric electricity, industrialize the region and allocate water to develop the area into an intensive farming zone for Iranian and U.S. companies. The thesis highlights the continuities between the public and private sectors in the development model proposed by Lilienthal and the export of that continuity to the Iranian context, with the resulting adaptations, tensions and oppositions.
