Riassunto
This thesis aims to provide a detailed and in-depth analysis on the phenomenon of sundown towns, drawing primarily on Sundown Towns: A Hidden Dimension of American Racism, published in 2005 by American author James W. Loewen, an expert in the field. The work will be divided into three chapters and it will also include a partial translation, from English into Italian, of the original text. The first chapter offers a comprehensive presentation of the author and the book itself, dwelling on his personal and professional ideology concerning racial relations in American society and the historical context and characteristics of sundown towns. The second chapter elaborates on contemporary manifestations of sundown towns and addresses how their constitutive traits still linger in current discriminatory practices. The third chapter focuses on the translation and illustrates its theoretical framework and its methodological, notional aspects; it outlines the translation process, discussing the main stylistic and terminological challenges and explaining the strategies employed to make the text accessible to an Italian reader.
